The open-path method employs optical differential absorption spectroscopy, allowing for the simultaneous monitoring of multiple trace pollutants. Compared to traditional point instruments, it provides significant advantages, including continuous online measurement, stable operation, a wide measurement range (with remote sensing capabilities), low operational and maintenance costs, shorter maintenance intervals, and the ability to operate without the need for personnel supervision.

The complete system comprises a long-path differential absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) gas monitor, CO analyzer, PM??and PM?.? monitors, a meteorological station, and a data acquisition system.
